Intellectual property (commonly known as “IP”) is an area of law that protects “intangible” property. The basis of intellectual property law is in real property law, which extended traditional notions of protecting property to ideas as other inventions that cannot be easily defined (contrast this with real property laws, which deals with easily defined pieces of property). The main areas of IP law are:

Patent: protects an invention (but not an idea itself)
Trademark: protection that identifies a source of goods or services (usually through a name or logo)
Copyright: protects an expression in a tangible and fixed medium (anything from writing on a paper, to artwork, to a newspaper, to computer software)
Trade secret: protects a formula, practice, process, design, instrument, pattern, or compilation of information from use by others

Our law firm has experience with all areas of intellectual property law, and can assist you and your business with all aspects of IP law.
